PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov. 21, 2025)–Cambodia has confirmed it will send athletes and delegates to compete in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, scheduled from December 9 to 20 in Thailand, even as border tensions between the two countries continue to simmer.

Secretary of State for the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Vat Chamroeun, who also serves as secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said sports are built on principles of friendship, solidarity and peace. He emphasized that Cambodia’s participation reflects those values and remains consistent with its tradition of joining the SEA Games every two years.

Chamroeun noted that Thailand, as host, has assured Cambodia of security and order during the competition. He said the Cambodian delegation’s focus is on training and competing, while strengthening ties with ASEAN neighbors and the host nation.

Cambodia plans to send athletes in 21 sports to the Games, which will feature 574 events across 50 disciplines. Competitions will take place in Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla provinces, with opening and closing ceremonies at Rajamangala National Stadium.

Officials say the Games will provide an opportunity not only for athletic achievement but also to reinforce regional unity and friendship, even amid political challenges.
